At about 11:00pm at the office, Danny called us for a brief update on the school visit that was going to be held at Bishop Abiero Girls High School. We went through the math activity file together so us to decide on an activity that would be done during the session. It was not an easy task choosing what we were comfortable with because this was our first time to lead the presentation. I was a little bit nervous at first because I anticipated a lot and just hoped that the session was going to be a great success. We made a lot of preparation on the activity that lay ahead and delegated the duties between ourselves. We left for the session at around 3:00pm and kicked off the session quite well. I introduced the game and was so happy because the students understood it instantly. I got so motivated by this and got convinced that anyone can lead the session. I also got to answer some questions asked by the students and explained. I was so impressed by the feedback as one of them said she would someday want to be like me and teach others. It was such a great experience for a starter!
This is ideally a math game that never ceases to amaze me,it is actually the first game i was introduced to by Emily Hobbs during the first math camp. This game requires one to connect four tabs of the same color first before your opponent does it so as to be crowned a winner and can be played in pairs. It may sound simple and easy for a starter but as the game progresses it becomes tougher and challenging. It requires one to be keen and have strategies so as to win.It is so interesting to play as it gets you thinking hard and watch the move of your opponent because it is not easy to predict the winner. As long as you try making geometrical quadrilaterals using the tabs then you headed to win...you have to try this one out...i bet you will enjoy it!!!!
The school visits basically revolves around several activities and ideas that are done with the students.School visits are meant to give the students a platform to showcase their brilliant ideas and mathematical techniques hence solving some problems and giving proof to answers.Schools visits are done on Tuesday and Thursday. The schools visited so far include Ebusakami High School,Kisumu Girls High School and Bishop Abiero Girls High School. The visit is done by the African Maths Initiative team and during the math sessions the facilitator presides over the session aided by volunteers who supervise the students and correct their errors.A general introduction is made of the subject matter, clarification is also done and a conclusion made within the time limit of one hour.Students are also given a chance to ask questions to clear their doubts and assignments may be given for better understanding and practice. At the end of it all,a lot is achieved because a positive impact is made and a growing interest in mathematics is portrayed hence the students improve their grades.
